Boating safety tips*

Capsizing and falling overboard into chilly waters are major hazards for hunters on the water. During the majority of the hunting seasons, waters are cold enough to pose a serious hypothermia threat. Nationwide, 70 percent of all boating fatalities are the result of drowning. Almost 90 percent of the victims were not wearing Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs). As a responsible hunter, you need to be aware of the dangers and follow a few simple tips to make your hunt a safer and more enjoyable experience. Those tips are:

  • Always wear a properly fitted PFD when in a boat.
  • Never overload your boat.
  • Always stay seated when shooting from an open boat.
  • Never anchor from the stern.
  • If an accident occurs, STAY WITH THE BOAT.
  • Unless the clothing is creating a hazard, do not remove extra clothing. It can help prevent hypothermia.
  • Tell someone where you are hunting and when you plan to return.
All accidents cannot be prevented, but by following these few simple rules, you can greatly improve your chances of survival should an accident occur.
