Wisconsin high court to decide fate of dove hunt (1/9/2004)

Sportsmen are now entering the final round of the legal fight to defend mourning dove hunting in Wisconsin.

The Sportsmen's Legal Defense Fund (SLDF), the legal arm of the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation, is joining the state of Wisconsin in defense of the state's recently established dove hunt. It will present oral arguments to the Wisconsin Supreme Court on January 15. The Wisconsin Supreme Court decided to hear the case after an appeals court reversed an earlier ruling that stopped the hunt.

"The Natural Resources Board and the legislature approved the dove hunt in 2000 making Wisconsin the 39th state with a dove season," said Rob Sexton, foundation vice president for government affairs. "Legal challenges brought by anti-hunters claim the DNR did not have the authority to establish the hunt, but the SLDF has been confident from the beginning that it did."

Sexton added, "We believe that the Supreme Court will agree."

The SLDF joined forces with Wisconsin sportsmen's groups to first win, and later protect, the state's dove season. The Wisconsin Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Wisconsin Chapter of Safari Club International (SCI), Badgerland Chapter SCI, Lake Superior Chapter SCI, Sheboygan County Conservation Alliance, Wisconsin Waterfowl Association and others led the way in defense of the dove hunt.
