Michigan House passes dove hunting bill (11/4/2003) The Michigan House of Representatives today approved House Bill 5029 that would make Michigan the 40th state to allow mourning dove hunting. The vote came after a morning rally of over 1,000 sportsmen and sportswomen at the State Capitol. The bill, introduced by Rep. Susan Tabor, R-Delta Township, was approved by a vote of 64 to 44. Two members abstained. The vote took place just hours after hunters wearing orange hunting caps flooded the State Capitol in support of the measure. House Bill 5029 now heads to the Senate. The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and its partners formed the Michigan Hunting Rights Campaign to pass House Bill 5029. The coalition is excited about the actions of Michigan sportsmen and the advancement of the bill. "Sportsmen came and the legislators listened... that's the way it should work," said Rob Sexton, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance vice president for government affairs. "Hopefully our message will be as clear to the Senate as they begin discussing this bill." The Michigan Hunting Rights Campaign members include Commemorative Bucks of Michigan, Huron Pointe Sportsmen's Association, Michigan Bear Hunters Association, Michigan Bow Hunters Association, Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners, Michigan Hunting Dog Federation, Michigan State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Michigan State United Coonhunters Association, Michigan Trappers Association, the National Rifle Association and the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance. Michigan sportsmen can support this legislation by contacting their senators today and telling them to vote "yes" on HB 5029.
