National charity being chastised by anti's for sponsoring hunts for disabled children (9/12/2003) Sportsmen Urged to Praise the Charity for Its Gifts to Young People A national animal rights group is calling for a youth ministry organization to end its sponsorships of hunting trips for children with physical disabilities. Special Youth Challenge Ministries, Inc. is a national volunteer ministry that teaches physically challenged youth how to overcome some of the obstacles of shooting and hunting through special training and events. The Fund for Animals, a leading anti-hunting organization, wants the group to stop this important work. In a letter to Special Youth Challenge Ministries' founder Charles Walthour, the Fund's Norm Phelps called hunting "contrary to the gospel of Christ." The group's National Director Heidi Prescott said the children should be taken "hunting with cameras instead of guns." According to its website, the Special Youth Challenge Ministries strives to empower physically challenged youth to enjoy hunting and the shooting sports and teach them to overcome barriers of the outdoors through the use of special methods, equipment or assistance from volunteers. "Certainly, many of us take for granted the ease with which we are able to hike into the woods, climb into a tree stand and even shoot our quarry," said U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Senior Vice President Rick Story. "Special Youth Challenge Ministries is being tormented by animal rights zealots who are apathetic to the struggles of the young people who are working to accomplish meaningful personal goals. The antis' primary concern is not the personal fulfillment and satisfaction of the children, but rather the outright elimination of hunting." Take Action! Sportsmen can send a message to the Special Youth Challenge Ministries and let them know that the work they do is important. Send your comments to Special Youth Challenge Ministries, Inc., P.O.
