Washington Senate to consider repeal of trapping ban (1/24/2003)

Washington could be the first state to overturn an anti-hunting ballot issue if sportsmen can successfully persuade their state senators to support Senate Bill 5129. The Senate Parks, Fish & Wildlife Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on the bill on Tuesday, January 28 at 1:30 PM.

Trapping was banned in Washington after animal rights organizations misled the public about the impact of Initiative 713. Landowners all over Washington are paying the price. Now legislators have the opportunity to fix the problem, and give wildlife management back to the professionals.

The anti's will fight hard to stop this bill from advancing. To win, all Washington sportsmen must contact the senators on the committee and ask for their support for Senate Bill 5129.

  • Senator Bob Oke 360-786-7650
  • Senator Larry Sheahan 360-786-7620 or 509-397-5092
  • Senator Mark Doumit 360-786-7636
  • Senator Luke Esser 360-786-7694
  • Senator Ken Jacobsen 360-786-7690
  • Senator Bob Morton 360-786-7612
  • Senator Harriet Spanel 360-786-7678 or 360-336-3833
  • Senator Dan Swecker 360-786-7638

Sportsmen should also attend the hearing if possible. Plan to arrive early to assure you get a seat and that you are signed up on the committee attendance sheet. You can sign the sheets supporting the bill and choose not to testify. The animal rights folks turned out over 200 people last year. We turned out about 175. Attendance is important.

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance supports Senate Bill 5129 because it is a full repeal of the misleading I-713. Legislation that repeals only mole and gopher trapping is not enough. While urban areas are experiencing lumpy yards and golf course fairways; rural residents, ranchers and farmers are facing economic hardship feeding a surplus of predators with no effective means to control them. Senate Bill 5129 solves the problem.

When calling, provide your name and address to prove that you are a Washington resident. Encourage your family and friends to respond and pass this information along to organizations to which you belong.
