Stop legislation that would seriously damage hunting (9/24/2002)

A bill is being considered in the Senate Judiciary Committee that would undermine hunting and wildlife conservation.  A new amendment to S.1655 by Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) claims to be “a rational and common sense approach” to the issue of exotic animals and enclosures.

The amendment sets arbitrary restrictions and other constraints on game preserves.  It defines fair chase in a way that threatens all hunting.  The language is vague and unenforceable.  The amendment to S.1655 would also jeopardize state wildlife agencies by undermining their authority to regulate game within their states.

The amendment would remove what traditionally has been an issue regulated on a state-by-state basis and would bring management of game preserves under the control of the federal government.

The bill is scheduled to come to a vote before the Senate Judiciary Committee in early October.

Call both of your U.S. Senators today!  You can contact them by calling 202-224-3121 and asking to be connected to their offices.  Ask each of your senators to vote against S.1655 because it undermines wildlife conservation across the country.  Also, if you are a resident of any of the states below, contact your member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and ask him or her to vote against S.1655 because it is vague and would adversely affect sportsmen.
