Owner of Houston "hoops" team to make veggie meals available at ball games (9/6/2002)

The owner of a Texas NBA team who is a strong supporter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and animal rights causes will offer meat-free foods at the new Houston Arena.

Leslie Alexander, owner of the Houston Rockets will control food and drink sales at the Houston Arena, the future home of the Houston Rockets and Comets.

The promotion of vegetarian foods is not Alexander’s first endorsement of animal rights.  Complimentary media meals are often vegetarian, the team’s dance squad occasionally wears shirts that read, “Animals Have Rights,” and he has prohibited the use of creature shaped piñatas during game promotions.

Dan Shannon, PETA’s campaign coordinator, calls Alexander and his soon-to-be ex-wife Nanci, an animal rights leader in Florida, among its strongest supporters.
