Wisconsin turkey hunters help defend dove hunting (8/15/2002) Turkey hunters in Wisconsin have stepped forward to protect the state's dove hunting season, which is being threatened by a lawsuit brought by anti-hunters. The Wisconsin Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) has contributed $5,000 to help pay the mounting legal bills incurred by the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance as it works on behalf of sportsmen to defeat an anti-dove hunting lawsuit in the state. "The Wisconsin Chapter of NWTF understands that this case is bigger than just dove hunting," said Tony Celebrezze, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance director of field services. "It is about the future of hunting and the authority of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to regulate wildlife in the state for the benefit of its citizens." The Wisconsin DNR has demonstrated on numerous occasions that it followed all procedures and does have the authority to set hunting seasons for mourning doves and other game animals. "The anti's are looking for any foothold in Wisconsin," said Greg Shermo, president of Wisconsin NWTF. "This court case is about protecting wildlife conservation and stopping the anti's from stripping authority from the Department of Natural Resources. To that end, we challenge other Wisconsin conservation clubs and organizations to step up and help defray the legal bills being incurred by the Sportsmen's Alliance on behalf of Wisconsin sportsmen."
