NWTF donations protect sportsmen's rights (7/3/2002)

The National Wild Turkey Federation, a longtime supporter of conservation issues and sportsmen’s rights, has again contributed $100,000 to the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance in an effort to protect America’s outdoor heritage. The contribution brings NWTF’s total contributions to the Alliance’s work to protect hunting, fishing and trapping to $475,000.

"The restoration of the wild turkey, white-tailed deer and even the bald eagle would not have happened without sportsmen. Conservation can’t exist without hunters," said Rob Keck, CEO of the NWTF. "The Federation’s mission statement makes it 100 percent clear that we’re committed to hunting, and our contributions to the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance will be used to protect and advance the rights of sportsmen throughout North America."

The check presentation was made on June 23 at the 2002 Outdoor Writers Association of America Conference in Charleston, West Virginia.

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance also wants to thank the Wisconsin Chapter of the NWTF for a $5,000 pledge. The group will make its contribution to help the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Sportsmen’s Legal Defense Fund (SLDF) continue the fight to establish a mourning dove hunting season in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin dove season, which was established in 2000, was put on hold while Circuit Court Judge Daniel Moeser determined if anti-hunters would be adversely affected by the hunt and if the state wildlife agency had the authority to set the season. He originally decided that the anti’s would not be harmed and the agency did have the authority, but later changed his ruling, further delaying the start of dove hunting in Wisconsin. The SLDF is appealing the judge’s decision.
