New Jersey bill would ban bear hunting, fund anti's and strip wildlife agency of authority (1/22/2002) New Jersey- Sportsmen's rights and scientific wildlife management would be dealt a damaging blow if New Jersey Assembly Bill 479 becomes law. A.B. 479, sponsored by Assemblyman Christopher Bateman (R - Morris and Somerset), would prohibit the hunting of black bear in New Jersey for five years. Also, the bill would hand $95,000 to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal rights organization. Finally, the bill strips wildlife management authority from the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife by mandating that only the Governor or the legislature can issue a permit to take a black bear. There are several reasons why this bill must be defeated. Black bears should be managed, like all other wildlife, by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife. This bill not only takes away that authority, it also hands that authority to politicians. Even more alarming, this bill would give HSUS nearly $100,000 to develop a non-lethal plan to manage bears. Remember, Wayne Pacelle, vice president of HSUS was quoted saying, "We're out to outlaw all hunting, starting with the easiest cell.” Why would New Jersey sportsmen want to fund the nation's most powerful anti-hunting organization?
